ORGANIC VINEYARD IN GEORGIA

Our vineyard is located in the eastern Georgian wine region of Kakheti, more precisely in the fertile Alazani Valley. We are part of Kindzmarauli Mirozone, one of the world’s best growing areas for Saperavi, but also for our other three endemic varieties Kisi, Rkatsiteli, and Khikhvi.

Our vineyard is located between the small town of Kvareli and the village of Sanavardo in the middle of a vast plain – far away from civilization and surrounded only by trees, other vineyards, nut and fruit orchards.

WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO US

BIODIVERSITY

In our vineyard, we strive for high biodiversity. Every year, we plant different varieties of vegetables between the lines, but also grasses and other wild plants are welcome. Starting in the fall of 2022, we will plant various trees and hedges around the vineyard to attract even more beneficial insects, reptiles, and other animals. Nature is welcome in all its diversity.

Organic vineyard in Georgia

ORGANIC

Since the start in 2020, we have been constantly converting our vineyard to organic. Already today, we no longer use any herbicides. Against fungal infestation, we only spray the substances sulfur, copper, and potassium bicarbonate that are permitted in organic viticulture. By the end of 2023, our vineyard will be 100% compliant with the EU regulations on organic production

Local knowledge at Inavarde's vineyard

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

When working in the vineyard, we rely on local knowledge and experience. Responsible for the vineyard is Vano who has been growing vines for 25 years. His huge experience with vines, but also climate, weather, and other environmental influences are crucial for us. Besides Vano, all the additional workers we need are from the neighboring villages, too.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO YOU IRRIGATE YOUR VINEYARD?

No, we do not irrigate our vineyard. We rely on biodiversity and on nature to ensure that our grapes develop well. Unfortunately, climate change is increasingly causing problems for us and many other winegrowers in Kakheti. Summers are getting longer, hotter and drier. Therefore, it will be inevitable to irrigate our vineyard already in the near future.

WHAT DO YOU PLANT BETWEEN THE VINES?

In the beginning we planted beans. In the next few years we would like to try strawberries, pumpkin and alfalfa (lucerne). We are always open for exciting inputs and ideas.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO VISIT YOUR VINEYARD?

Of course, we would love to. If you are interested, contact us and tell us when you would like to come by. We will be happy to show you the vineyard and round off your visit with a few glasses of wine in our Marani.
