My Story
How I Became A Winemaker In Georgia
During my first 39 years of life in Switzerland, I would have never thought that I would one day produce natural wine in Georgia. In February 2020, that was about to change abruptly.
Born and raised in Baden/Wettingen, much of my life revolved around handball and sports in general. Professionally, I worked primarily in IT, and from 2009 onwards, as the CEO of a digital SME.
Although I had a connection to Georgia following various trips to the Caucasus – and even though I was running a travel agency specializing in the South Caucasus on the side at the time – there wasn't much indicating that I would one day produce organic wines in Georgia.
At the end of 2019, I decided to spend the entire year of 2020 in Georgia to push the travel agency forward. However, because Covid-19 made this difficult to impossible, I had to look around for a new challenge to prevent potential boredom.
Since I loved working in the garden as a child but hadn't been able to pursue this passion since, I set out to find a piece of land in my favorite region, Kakheti.
In the Alazani Valley, I found a place that I liked instantly. Part of the land was empty, while another part was planted with vines. The seller mentioned that a certain Vano had been taking care of the vines and suggested I should talk to him. Perhaps I could continue working with him. Fortunately, that is exactly what happened.
Initially, I just wanted to sell the grapes in the first year, but as summer drew to a close, the idea emerged to process at least a part of them into wine. I had no clue about winemaking, but with Vano's help, we brought the grapes to his garden, pressed them by hand, poured the mash into a steel tank, and waited until spring.
To my surprise, the result in the glass was actually quite drinkable. The excitement I felt during wine production caught me completely off guard. And so began a passionate journey full of learning, experiments, and new experiences – an end to which, fortunately, is nowhere in sight.

FAQ: Georgian Wines
Was macht euren Wein besonders?
Was macht euren Wein besonders?
What Is Orange Wine?
What Is Orange Wine?
Orange wine (also called amber wine) is made from white wine grapes. However, since it is not just the juice but also the skins and seeds that are fermented, the wine gets its typical orange color.
You can find more information under Orange Wines from Georgia.
What Does Orange Wine Taste Like?
What Does Orange Wine Taste Like?
All of our orange wines are dry, rather full-bodied, and – compared to classic white wines – have a higher tannin content.
They often feature aromas of honey, dried stone fruits, orange peel, and herbs.
How To Drink Orange Wine?
How To Drink Orange Wine?
Generally, you should drink our Georgian orange wines like red wines. We recommend wide wine glasses to increase oxygen contact, which benefits the wine.
It also makes sense to let the wine breathe for 30 to 60 minutes before pouring.
What Food Pairs Well With Orange Wine?
What Food Pairs Well With Orange Wine?
Orange wine pairs perfectly with dishes that have dominant flavors, which would easily overpower a classic white wine.
Where Does Orange Wine Come From?
Where Does Orange Wine Come From?
The first orange wines were produced in the territory of modern-day Georgia as early as 6000 BC. Fermenting white wine grapes together with their skins and seeds is an ancient tradition in Georgia.
More recently, an increasing number of winemakers from other countries have also embraced orange wine. Excellent producers can be found in Italy, Slovenia, Austria, and the United States, among others.
