Orange Wine from Georgia

Orange Wine from Georgia

What Is Orange Wine?

Orange wine is made from white grapes and fermented on the skins – this is what gives it its orange color.

The Art of Crafting Orange Wine

Unlike conventional white wines, where only the juice is fermented, we at Inavarde Wines work with the whole grape – honoring a tradition that has defined Eastern Georgia for millennia.

After the harvest, we gently crush the fruit and transfer the skins, pulp, and seeds into a Kvevri – a traditional clay amphora buried deep in the earth.

This extended skin contact allows the grapes to reach their full potential, as pigments, tannins, and complex aromatic compounds are naturally extracted. The result is a bold, amber-hued wine with profound depth, multi-layered aromas, and a distinct structure on the palate.

This Is Natural Wine

For us, wine is a gift of nature – a living product shaped by the soil, the sun, the rain, and the wind. Every year, these elements harmonize in new ways, creating unique conditions that are honestly reflected in every bottle we produce.

Our vines thrive because we strictly avoid chemicals and manage our vineyard using 100% organic practices. Instead of relying on commercial yeasts, we embrace indigenous, wild cultures that impart a new, authentic character to our wines with every vintage.

In the cellar, we follow a path of zero additives – meaning no sulfites and no fining agents. We rely entirely on natural filtration, allowing the wine to clarify itself through patient sedimentation.

FAQ About Orange Wine

How does orange wine taste?

Not all Orange wines are created equal. The aromatic spectrum of this wine style is just as diverse as that of red wines.

Orange wines (also known as Amber wines) are typically dry and bold, with a higher tannin content due to the skin-contact fermentation process.

How to drink orange wine?

We recommend using large, wide wine glasses for our Orange wines, as contact with oxygen allows them to fully open up. Additionally, letting the wine breathe in a decanter for 30 to 60 minutes before serving will enhance its complexity.

What food pairs well with Orange wine?

Thanks to their tannins and earthy notes, Orange wines pair perfectly with bold, dominant flavors that would easily overpower a classic white wine. Spicy dishes, as well as fermented foods, are excellent companions for Orange wine.

Does the orange color come from the Qvevri?

No, the underground clay amphorae – known as Qvevris – do not influence the color of the wine. Instead, it is the pigments in the grape skins that are extracted during fermentation, giving our Orange wines their unique, vibrant hue.

Where does Orange wine originate?

The first Orange wines were produced in the territory of present-day Georgia as early as 6,000 BC. Fermenting white grapes together with their skins and seeds is an ancient Georgian tradition.

In recent years, more and more winemakers from other countries have embraced this style. Outstanding producers can now be found in Italy, Slovenia, Austria, and the United States.

Do Orange wines contain more alcohol?

Not necessarily. The alcohol content of a wine is determined by the sugar content of the processed grapes. Generally speaking: the higher the sugar content, the higher the alcohol content.
